Looking for "Oxalis X" weed killer (kills oxalis). Anyone know where I can get it?

Our yard is being overrun by this weed (looks like shamrock). It's even killing the grass. All my research says it's almost impossible to get rid of. The only thing I can find mention of that works is an herbicide called "Oxalis X." I think it's made by a company called National Chelating, but I haven't found anything on them.

Your problem is not all that unusual. Oxalis is actually a member of the Clover family (thus the shamrock shaping). You will get white flowers with clover when oxalis will give you yellow or a purple type of flower. It can and does spread quite quickly and is a pest unless you are trying to use it as your groundcover.

The solution is simple, however, finding the proper chemical is more difficult these days. You need to go to a local store or nursery that sells specifically to landscapers. The chemical you are looking for is 2-4D. It is generally sold in a combination with MCPP and Dicamba. The three are combined in both granular and liquid for application. The liquid is the best.

The 2-4D was a hot list chemical in the 80's and 90's. It's effectiveness was second to none for control of oxalis and dandylion, etc. The liquid application, once dry, is the safest and poses no true threat to people or animals. The granular can linger for days posing the threat. You will need to apply the liquid formula, per the specific directions, in the spring and the fall.

Most homeowners think if a little is good more would be better! False!! The spring application will only reduce the population. The Fall application does more to control the weed. Follow the directions to a T!! In addition you should purchase a Certified Ryegrass Mixture. Using the liquid application you can topseed with the ryegrass one week after the spray. The ryegrass will quickly germinate and repace the oxalis, to a degree. You topseed after both applications.

The chemical is generally regulated as hazardous. It may be that you will have to employ a State Licensed Applicator for the spray. The cost should be about $25.00 per 1,000 square foot. Topseed the lawn yourself, however, purchase only Certified Ryegrass. It has no weed content and a germination of no less than 90% . Hope it helps. you can contact me at gjgjobs@yahoo.com if this confuses you. Good Luck
Reply:Try your local nursery, or even Walmart, Lowes, or Home Depot (they should have something similar that will work). Roundup will kill any plant, but you have to watch out and not overspray or it will kill everything else around it. God Bless, Martha S.
