Why are shamrocks part of the irish culture/history?

Why are shamrocks part of the irish culture/history?
I heard it's because the Catholic teachers, mainly St. Patrick, taught the pagans about the cross by using a shamrock because it's shape resembles a cross.



And because shamrocks grow in Ireland.
