How come the UFC keeps throwing these old guys in the ring, don't they know people don't want to see them

like ken shamrock, royce gracie, now randy couture? whos next, marco ruas vs. ric flair? how can we say UFC is better then prdie when they put together a ridiculous fight like these? I'm not krapping on those guys, they were all excellent fighters in their day, I'm just saying I don't like seeing them get embarrassed

Well I partially agree. I dont have a problem watching them fight, but I want to see more young scrappy fighters in there. I think they should open their doors to upcoming prospects more, there are hundreds of top ranked fighters who are trying to get into the UFC.
Reply:Whatever you might think, there is only one reason for the UFC and that is to make money for Dana White. People remember names like Gracie, Shamrock, Abbot, even Kimo because they were the pioneers of the UFC and were built up as characters rather than just fighters. Today, there really aren't any fighters that stand out as icons. Even though they are very skilled fighters, they are all basically the same.



Boxing has been going through the same problem. Tennis is starting to have the same problem now that Agassi is gone. Golf has started a point system to encourage guys like Tiger to enter more tournaments because that's who people want to see.



UFC brings back the 'legends' in hopes of bringing back viewers that they have lost over the past few years. One of my personal issues with the UFC is that they have a Pay-per-view almost every month. Guys come and go because they get hurt or burnt out. The headliners don't fight in every PPV, so they need someone to fill in the gaps.

UFC and Pride and K-1 all have top quality fighters.
Reply:Because you have to admit it does get everyones attention and people get to chattering about the UFC. Even if the publicity is not100% the best, it is still people talking about the UFC.



Plus the name Couture is going to draw people out of curiosity and If they get you to come see that fight then then can showcase newer less known fighters on that same fight card.



Plus on the off chance that Couture does beat Sylvia you get the added benefit of pleasing people who are ready for Sylvia to go.



Overall you have to admit that the quality of the fights as of late have been on the whole pretty interesting. Like the Matt Hughes vs. St. Pierre fight or Rich Franklin vs. Silva etc.



And perhaps competition from PRIDE will push the UFC to have better fights in the future.

Reply:The only reason UFC keeps bringing back all these "old guys" is because they are good for the sport and will help it grow. UFC is all about exposure in the media. Bringing guys in like this is a great move because most of them are pioneers and have nothing but class and good things to say. Unlike the newer guys like Chris Leben, Kendall Grove, Joe Riggs, and Ed Herman who are nothing but loud mouths who make the sport look bad.
