What's the difference between a shamrock and a clover??

I believe the shamrock refers to the symbol and the clover the plant. A clover can refer to one of the 300 plants in that genus, while shamrock refers to the "clover symbol" but can also be represented by a plant of the genus Oxalis which also has three leaves. It is used as a symbol of Ireland, St. Patricks Day, and the Trinity, and other things, while a clover is simply a clover. Oh, and a shamrock has THREE leaves, not four, for then it is a four-leaved clover. Contrary to what I thought but here are my sources. I hope I helped.

Clover, can have 3 or 4, but when it has 4, we call it a shamrock
