I know that some MMA organisations do allow fighters to use elbow strikes on a downed opponent, but what about the UFC? My friend says they banned them, but I'm pretty sure I'v seen pretty recent fights where fighters have utilised elbows on the ground (Tito Vs Shamrock 2 and 3 for example)
Is my friend right?
Please settle an arguement: are UFC fighters allowed to use elbow strikes against a grounded opponent?
Im pretty sure they can I just watched UFC a few nights ago.

Reply:yes they are
Reply:Yes, elbow strikes are allowed to be used against a down opponent in the UFC. Everyone is wrong about knees, though. Knees can be used against a down opponent, just not to the head.
Reply:Elbows and punches on the ground, but people quite often get caught out for hitting the opponent on the back of the head, which is against the rules, and the opponent gets the choice of having a time out to recover.
Reply:yes elbows are allowed against a grounded opponent but offern elbows are used as defence from the grounded or mounted opponent as well as for striking
